At times, it got difficult, but I kept trying.
When I first started karate at Ambra Karate Academy, I was in third grade. Now that I’m in high school, I realize how much karate has impacted my life. At first, I was really quiet and when I joined, I promised myself to at least make it to an orange belt. Over time, I made some friends (my best friends) and just never quit. Now I’m a black belt! At times, it got difficult, but I kept trying. I have to say, though, I’d still be back at the beginning if it weren’t for the patience Mr. Ambra and all the other people around me had.

Over six years at Ambra Karate has taught me so much more than just martial arts. I’ve learned self control, obedience, and common knowledge, but classes are never boring. Games like soccer and dodge ball aren’t just fun, they test our reaction time and coordination and build up endurance. The teens class is certainly tougher than the juniors class, but it’s nice to be challenged. There’s a little more (unintentional) pain, but it’s worth it. I could go on forever praising the teens class and everyone in it, even if they are a little rough.

Going to karate each week has meant so much to me. I can’t even describe the thrill of getting a new belt if you haven’t felt the pride before. You keep moving forward and push yourself because you know you have the strength and you don’t want to let anyone (or yourself for that matter) down. Working hard for something you desperately want, and then receiving it, is utterly amazing. The key is to never give up. If you think you can’t, you won’t because you won’t give it your all. You need to have the confidence in yourself. I was terrified the morning of my first black belt test, but I went and I worked through it. Sometimes, you have to deal with something you’re afraid of because if you don’t, you can miss out on loads of great things. In the end, I had to admit to myself I was worried over nothing. The same inspiring people I worked beside during class were still there to guide me.

Karate is just like any other sport, if you put in the effort, you can achieve a lot. I’ve come so much farther than I ever thought I would. I quit plenty of sports and activities when I was younger. They just weren’t for me. When kids who quit karate come back to visit, I realize just how long I’ve been there. I’ve seen plenty of people come and go, but the ones who stay, I find, happen to be the ones you can always rely on to help you out. Never once have they refused to lend a hand.

Getting this far took some work, but it was certainly worth it. Of course, practicing helped to remember anything new that I learned (I forget things easily). Ambra Karate has been my home away from home where I can always count on my extended family; it’s been a big part of my life. If I really wanted to give all the thanks people deserve (like my parents who actually pay for me to go) or talk about all my experiences and what I’ve learned over my six years year, this essay would go on forever.

My Black Belt

Being of a technical, scientific background typically writing audit reports and for chemistry books or journals, I am more accustomed to presenting facts and making logical conclusions rather than writing an essay about myself. This task in itself is very challenging and quickly brings back horrors of high school English grammar classes. This also brings back the many good memories of the people, events and great relationships I built and strengthened during my journey. Below is a brief synopsis with many specific examples omitted, but all significant lessons treasured.

In summarizing the meaning of a Black Belt, according to the Tang Soo Do student manual, it means mastery of basic techniques. This is way too simplified. It has been a challenging, though enjoyable journey for me.

I started this journey as an opportunity to grow with my husband and to improve my overall health. Now karate is a major participant in my life that I would have never believed from the start. Strategies used in sparring and in learning new techniques were successfully applied to stressful situations both at home and professionally. Many of my physical and mental obstacles were confronted and overcome through much sweat and determination. Many of my challenges were self-induced, but they make me who I am today. A self-motivated, enthusiastic, daunting woman who encourages challenges and is not easily intimidated. Today I am in better shape mentally and physically than ever and vow not to be anything less in the future.

Physical:
My image of a black belt is one of ultimate physical fitness and serenity. A high level of endurance, strength, flexibility and focus are typical characteristics. As a white belt, I obviously did not understand even how to start this journey, never mind envisioning earning a ‘black belt’. During my red belt, I lost 55 pounds through a healthy diet and this wonderful karate class that I considered fun, though challenging. My weight was my last crutch in my life. I always worked hard and been successful in my endeavors, though shedding this weight was the most difficult for me. I just loved food! Unfortunately my food obsession was now becoming a huge obstacle in my karate. Once determined to achieve my goal, Mr. Ambra and the school were very supportive. The pounds seemingly flew off in approximately 6 months and my physicality became closer to my vision. Now the challenge was re-learning all the techniques with this new body, though untapped sources of endurance, energy, strength and flexibility were found. This achievement quickly taught me that most of my physical obstacles were mostly self-induced, hence lending me to improve quickly as a red belt ready to test for Cho Dan Bo.

After several tough physical blows, a significant accomplishment was an improved ability to focus. A broken foot, strained sarcoptic nerve, numerous miscellaneous foot injuries and several death kisses from Sean’s sidekick have truly built my character. The injuries taught me a few things: get out of the way, look for the opportunity and focus only on your objective. This is an area I am looking to strengthen in my next journey as a black belt.

Mental
The Cho Dan Bo level was a substantial asset to my preparation for Black Belt. This stage was obviously the development of our spirits and mental conditioning. This did not occur over night! As I recall quite vividly, it demanded many hours of Mr. Ambra’s counseling; MANY late night discussions with Sean including a serious sparring scuffle on our Caribbean vacation, long silent treatments after class due to frustration; listening to Sean babble endlessly about himself every night after class, many bruises and even worse, bruised egos through tournaments and miscellaneous sparring matches. Yes I am stubborn, but I then realized my vision of a black belt is achievable. This is MY black belt. It is about consistently giving 110% effort, acknowledging limitations and working with them, humility, and most important continually striving for the best both personally and for the school.

School
Here is a school, located off the beaten path, being instructed by a peculiar, young, karate instructor with copious amount of teaching enthusiasm and flexibility. He was a new instructor, when I started, and I watched him mature into the excellent mentor/instructor he is today. He genuinely is the friend, confidant, counselor, coach and the sympathetic ear needed to assure the successful guidance on this journey. He eagerly welcomes anyone and challenges their abilities. Volumes of people have entered the school since I started and each brings new talents and challenges to enhance overall development. After achieving my Cho Dan Bo, the interaction amongst other students was a critical part of my growth. Starting to teach and mentor other students taught me about my level of mastery, something taken for granted. We now have a strong repertoire of newer students that are technically stronger and better than I was from the beginning. During each belt test, I reflect on their progression and admire their perseverance, as I truly understand the challenges they face and encourage them on their journey. Unfortunately, some students have left or attend intermittently hence are missed because of the value they add. This is when I realized this is my journey that I must walk alone and not depend on a team to bring me to the black belt level and beyond. Sean and I have always pushed very hard during this journey and frequently forget where we started. Upon reflecting on the journey I see my maturity and the school’s has developed into a family knit together by the passion of excellence.

Sean

Yes he gets his own section, because he is special. Though not much is required here. We are both naturally very competitive; always striving for perfection, hence can be sometimes too demanding of ourselves. Sean has been my confidant, challenge, strength, friend and husband through this journey. We have grown closer mentally and improved ourselves physically while learning to motivate and encourage one another selflessly. This journey would not have been as rewarding without him.

Webster’s definition of black belt can be quoted as, ”The rank of an expert in a form of karate.” I personally dislike the word “expert”, because I always believe there is opportunity to learn and improve. The journey I just completed leaves me aptly prepared mentally and physically for the next step. Though I have completed this part of the journey, somehow I believe the easier part; I welcome my new beginning as a black belt.

I write this after the test, so it will be somewhat biased, however, I think the difference will be minimal as I have not yet received the belt….

The Meaning of Black Belt to Me

Upon hearing of the requirement to write this essay, I started by thinking of a suitable title… “My Black Belt”, “Finally There”, “My Black Belt and Me”, or “Pain, Suffering, and Rewards”, but none of them were close to describing what this event meant to me. But how could they? How could a single title describe how martial arts has shaped my life for the past years? And then it struck me; that that is exactly what the black belt is. It is the end of the new, and the beginning of the old; it is the start of a journey just finished; it is a marker of past experience, and a gateway of things to come.

My journey to this point was not easy, but it’s not supposed to be. I had taken Karate before, so I knew the difficulties when I started. However, I never progressed to this level before. I would have never thought it to include so many, let me repeat, so many emotional, spiritual, and mental challenges. The most surprising of these challenges was overcoming myself.

My Own Worst Enemy
I never realized the power of positive thinking, not only in attitude, but also in actual ability. I had to continually force myself to believe positively in myself to gain ability. Every fight, form, and exercise was spent telling myself over and over, “Yes, you can do this”. Every night after class was a selfish wondering of, “Am I doing this correct? Am I succeeding?” Self-doubt and lack of confidence were always there to bring me down without warning. It was so easy to give up even before trying, and even more so after trying only once.

But I kept coming, week after week, month after month. As the years progressed, I began to notice that when I was doing a technique or sparring that I felt confident about, I could perform at a higher level. My questions shifted from “Why can’t I …” to “Why can I only do this when…”At this point I realized that I was again holding myself back by allowing myself to be influenced by outside conditions that had nothing to do with my performance.

From there I progressed into being afraid of injuring others I respected. No one respects a dog that barks and never bites, and I began to loose respect for myself. How could I come all this way and still not be able to perform? I did all of the lessons over and over, but I was stopping myself every time. I feared I would injure someone and yet would stand there and take a beating. Why couldn’t I fight back after all this training? I was holding myself back, again! My own internal fears, my lack of self respect, the difficulties I had growing up were all coming to the surface for one last ditch effort. Ugh, I’m my own worst enemy. How frustrating.

Overcoming the enemy within required a continuous cycle of learning, practice, reassurance, training, and humility. One by one, my internal barriers were removed. Class went from something I struggled to do to something I wanted to do.

The Physical Struggle
The physicality of martial arts is amazing. Aerobic ability, strength, flexibility, stamina, mental control; martial arts has it all. Only I started with very little. I think the biggest intimidator of joining martial arts is the fear of not being able to do what others in class can. Honestly, while I may get frustrated because I can’t do something, nearly everyone starts from the same position. I’ll look back on my starting position on some points of interest…

Push-ups (without stopping)
Start: 6
Current: 72

This was embarrassing, to say the least. It’s a good thing there weren’t many students in the beginning. But I just kept trying.

Sit-Ups (without stopping)
Start: 12
Current: 120+

I always hated sit-ups. They never seemed to do anything. Turns out I wasn’t doing them correctly. Interlacing your hands behind your neck only strains it.

Side Kick
Start: No technique
Current: Spinning side kick breaking three 1” boards

I struggled for the longest to do these kicks properly. My frustration mounted to the breaking point. One night after class I demanded Mr. Ambra teach me his secret to doing a sidekick. He obliged by watching my miserable attempt, and then asked me why I wasn’t turning my stationary foot like he taught in class. Some secret.

Forms
Start: 5 forms
Current: 10 forms + 2 Staff forms + 36 Step forms

I knew some of the forms when I started, which made it easier for me to work on the specific techniques in each. It’s weird, but no matter how difficult the advanced forms look, the first form with that turn-around will always be the most difficult.

Sparring
Start: Duck, cover, and run
Current: Can’t beat Ambra, yet…

Sparring. Ugh. “Mr. Lead-foot”, “Cement shoe Sean”, “The plant”, “stinkin’ thinkin’”, all these terms describe my struggle with sparring. It’s not that I didn’t like it, I just couldn’t perform were I wanted to be. My motto was “if I let them hit me, eventually they will make a mistake or get tired, then I’ll take them out.” Unfortunately, this really does not work.

The motivation of class

My desire to teach

My mentor

Hey guys, TY here!

Not sure how many of you read this, but I thought I’d put something up today, in light of the big test this Saturday.

Those of you that are testing for your black-belts: Don’t. Worry.

I know that the first test is always the worst, and its much different than anything you’re used to. But its not something to be afraid of. This is the one time, where you should stand up and just tackle it head on. Figuratively of course. You will do just fine. Believe in yourself.

Those of you that this isn’t your first test: All Out. Nonstop.

Everyone should be all out on this one. No excuses. Just do it. If you’re an upper belt, be proud of who you are, what you know, and show it off. Everyone will be watching you. But its not for the reasons you may be thinking. They won’t be watching to see if you’ll mess up, or to see if you crack. Or to see you look silly. They will be watching to see you. They want to see you, being yourself, doing something you love.

And for a good read, to get you excited for the test. This was a narrative essay for an AP English class in high-school. We had free reign of the topic. I chose my first Black-Belt test.

My Greatest Ambition

As I stepped out into the blinding light of the sun, I looked up to the sky; I felt great; no it was better than that. I felt as if I had just thrown the weight of all the years of pain, pressure, passion, devotion, sweat, and anger off of my back. It had been piled on top of me for the past seven years, and with it no longer pulling me down to the ground I felt as if I could soar through the sky, touching all the clouds and skimming along the edge of where the blue turns black. It felt like a tidal wave of emotion; overwhelming me in its crystal clear, aquamarine arms and immersing me into a new world, one that which I was a new man, a new person. I could do anything, and I was well ready for everything. I looked down, and I saw it, a small black colored belt, clenched in my fist. I would remember this day for the rest of my life.

Seven years earlier, as I looked up at a bright glowing sign in the dark of the night, it read, “Ambra Karate Academy.” At that exact point in time, looking back, I had no idea that one day karate would become my love, my life and my passion. As my dad and I walked into the small, meager looking shop, in line with identical stores, we sat down in a man’s office. We sat there, for me it felt like an eternity, each second ticked by with the slowest pace, all I wanted was to get in that class and start to learn. Finally, a young looking man, possibly in his early thirties, sat down in the chair behind his large oak desk, he looked and smiled, “What can I do for you?” He asked with the most sincere tone. After a long, boring period of sitting there swinging my feet back and forth, the man and my dad stood up and shook hands vigorously. My dad looked down to me and said, “This is Mr. Ambra, Ty. Listen to what he says and you will be fine.” He smiled at me and walked away, behind me, toward a small seating area. Turning around Mr. Ambra bent down to me, then at my eye level, he handed me a black tee-shirt, white pants and an oddly bright white belt. He pointed really far to the back right, and told me, “There is a changing room in the back, go back there and get changed. Class is about to start.”

Throughout the years I had begun to climb the great staircase of karate, each new belt I earned, I took another struggling step to the next floor. Every year was an amazing accomplishment for me. When I first joined karate; I had no clue, none at all that I would make it as far as I am today. I did not have my doubts of skill, but I did not think I would pursue it as much as I have. Every Tuesday and Thursday night, I walked in the amazing shop; I have devoted my life to karate. It has become more than an activity; it had become something I looked forward to. It had become my passion. It had become my life. As I had the final floors of the staircase in my sight I began to get extremely nervous. There was an enormous entity in my way, taking up the whole width of the vast staircase. I knew the first moment I laid my eyes on it that I would eventually have to stand up, and fight it. Though I had few challenges left to tackle, the time to conquer my greatest ambition had arrived; the match of wits and strengths was at last within an arms length, playing at my nerves, taunting my weaknesses. I knew that this had to happen; I was destined to attack, and defeat this thing. The Black Belt test was my next hurdle, and I was ready to soar high above it.

Only days remained between the confrontation of entity and I; the Test was coming. I grew more and more nervous. As the seconds ticked by until this epic battle, time became nothing more than a word to me. Hours seemed like seconds, seconds seemed like hours, all was a blur except for that entity, constantly looming overhead. I pained and struggled day by day, training with my every waking breath, determined to make it mine, to claim that trophy of my sweat and tears.
As I walked into the small, immeasurable shop, as I had for the past seven years, yet this time, it was different from the others lining the street. This time a new feeling flowed through me as I stepped through the door. It felt like home. Once I changed into my now all black attire, aside from the belt, which shone a brilliant blue, and I stepped out into the arena. Time froze before my eyes. All that is, was, and ever will be was right in front of me. The entity stood there, directly across from me, I took a deep breath. My moment was here. I charged the great beast.

It felt like a tidal wave of emotion; overwhelming me in its crystal clear, aquamarine arms and immersing me into a new world, one that which I was a new man, a new person, I could do anything. I was ready for anything, and everything. I looked down, and I saw it, a small black colored belt, clenched in my fist. I would remember this day for the rest of my life.

DISCIPLINE
A Black-Belt Journey
By Mike Gutzat

Discipline! This simple word means so much to each person’s life. It is an essential ingredient to education, work, martial arts and any other pursuit that one takes on. It is also the hallmark of a Black-Belt martial artist. The belt is a symbol of the individuals discipline to training, respect and understanding of the art itself.

In the beginning of my martial arts career I attended classes to keep pace with my son; hoping to be able to help him improve his forms and techniques. Learning a martial arts was always something I had thought about doing and the chance to start studying with my son was my motivation. I worked hard to getting the basics kicks down and on expanding my flexibility. In this early part of my experience my drive was still mainly for the exercise and to keep pace with my son.

Soon the drive was to improve my own technique and to learn more. I concentrated on improving my stances, control and flexibility. No longer was it just about keeping pace with my son but more about the improvements that it was bringing to my life and my health. It was at this time that the frustration started to mount.

Competition was also starting to mount. I found myself wanting more and more to be able to spar with the upper belts and not just hold my own but provide them with a challenge. Along with these efforts came more frustration and questions like: What was I doing wrong? Why didn’t my side kicks have more power? Why can’t I get those combinations off? How do I prevent from being pummeled?

Improvements came, although I didn’t feel like I had gotten that much better. Always my worst critic I didn’t think I was providing the challenge I wanted to. I certainly wasn’t doing as well as I felt I should be at that point. However, the upper belts were commenting on my progress and other class members were also commenting on it. Then the big challenge came when I was asked to run some classes.

Petrified I walked in for the first day to run classes for an ailing instructor. Not entirely sure how I would be received while there were other students with higher belts then myself. This was the first time that I felt all the hard work was paying off and showing. Being able to work with all of the students and help to improve basic things like stances and kicks gave me some confidence. It also spurred me on to keep improving so that I could continue to provide assistance for classes when needed and to aid other students.

Looking around I suddenly found myself as a Cho-Dan Bo and within reach of the Black-Belt. The opportunities to help run classes continued to help me with my own techniques; pushing me to improve my stances, forms and abilities. I still found myself asking questions about my own kicks, my sparring abilities and even my fitness. However I realized that much of this was and is my own self critique. I was now providing a challenge for the upper belts in class and was getting closer and closer to the control and technique to start helping the lower belts more and more as they improved.

Improvements finally did start to show. All of the hard work and discipline started to pay off. I was feeling like I had better control. Much more like I understood more about the style, techniques and forms. I also realized I had much more to learn and improve on. My hook kicks still seemed weak, my sparring was just so-so and my stamina seemed to have reached a plateau. More frustration showed as I was trying to over come these things. However with all the learning, teaching and frustration came the realization that these are all normal steps in the process. They can and will be over come with practice and discipline.

Now I was starting to feel like I was getting ready for the Black-Belt. Finally I saw more of the control and felt better about how my form looked. I was being asked more and more to help out in class with new students; teaching the beginning forms and techniques. I saw this as a benefit because it gave me the opportunity to focus on the “older” forms and techniques and improve how they looked. One thing I had seen while teach classes was that the upper belts all focused on the newer fancier forms and didn’t practice the beginning forms from where all the basic techniques grow.

Embarking on this journey has been interesting. I have covered numerous emotions that surround the progress and development of my skills. I have grown in my confidence not only in the martial arts but also in the ability to help teach others. I have also truly realized that the achievement of the Black-Belt rank, to quote a fellow Black-Belt, is like finally getting your training wheels taken off. Just like that person learning to ride a bike needs help and support during the learning process. I would be remiss if I didn’t pay tribute to my wife, Mary, and my children; Ryan, Rachel and Zachary, who have put up with all the extra work, time away and have supported me in this effort. While the achievement is an individual journey; without the support and understanding of family and friends, one would falter along the way. Thus I also need to thank Mr. Ambra and Sean Foster for the encouragement and challenges that they provided me along the journey.
